Paint Half the Table
You'll likely see a lot of two-tone tables in the stores this fall—it's an easy way to pull together different finishes in a room. Three looks to consider: a natural wood surface with a white base for a farmhouse feel; dark-stained wood with a black, navy or hunter-green base for an antique look; or for a surprising pop of color, a bold primary hue with any finish. DIY Sand wood or metal legs and base pieces to remove any flaked paint or rust. Prime and brush on two or three coats of paint. McBride Convertible Table, $399.95; Pier1.com

Trade a Lampshade
For a dramatic change (and not much money), swap in a new shade on your existing lamp—World Market and HomeGoods have great options under $25. Try a pattern or, for a more subtle update, a different texture (like jute or velvet) in your original shade's color. Coral Burlap Accent Lamp Shade, $12.99; Amazon.com

Add Eye-Catching Trim
A stripe of solid fabric placed along the bottom of a sofa, chair or curtain panel can make the piece feel fresh and—bonus!—hide worn edges. DIY Try a 2"- to 3"-wide band on upholstery or up to 1' on a curtain panel. Cut a stripe of your fabric to the length you want, plus 1" on both dimensions (for an upholstered piece, you may want to do several shorter strips). Fold the edges down ½" and press flat with an iron. Stitch onto fabric or adhere it with iron-on fusible web. Presidio Glider, from $995; SerenaandLily.com

Throw in a Striking Pattern
A graphic black-and-white print can liven up just about any room—and you don't have to worry about matching hues. Try a geometric rug or globally-inspired pieces. Add an embellishment
Don't toss those old pillows. Instead, give them new life by attaching tassels or oversize pompoms to the corners or a bright, playful trim along the edges.

Update a rug
Make a patterned statement piece underfoot: Using painter's tape, secure a stencil (available at Joann.com) to a flat-weave rug and brush on latex paint. (Or, design your own striped or chevron print with the tape.) Let dry completely.

Go no-sew
Turn plain fabric, bedsheets or even tablecloths into custom curtains without needle and thread. Just make a rod pocket with iron-on hemming tape, available at Ikea.com.

Take walls from bland to beautiful
Try mounting a cluster of pretty plates or a collection of flea market finds. Such objects-as-art lend dimension and are a great way to create a focal point on the cheap.

Transform a ceiling fan
Oh, what a can of spray paint can do! To hide dated features, pick a favorite paint hue, remove fan from the ceiling and paint it in a ventilated area. Let dry before rehanging.

Hang a free gallery
No budget for art? No problem. Clip mouthwatering food shots from magazines (think WD!) for your kitchen wall, or frame calendar illustrations to brighten a work area.

Make your room feel bigger
Overfilling a space with furniture can make it seem crowded. Better idea: Place a tall, sculptural potted plant in an empty corner to give the illusion of higher ceilings without adding clutter (plant in 10"-wide or larger container, from $15 at Lowes.com).
